When I first became interested in working in college admissions as a college senior, I sat down with the director of admissions at my undergraduate institution talk about the life of an admissions counselor. It was March, and his advice to me was to walk around the admissions office and ask admissions counselors about their careers. It was some of the best job-searching advice I got the month of March is one of the toughest months in college admissions (and not just for the students who are eagerly waiting to hear back from the colleges to which they have applied. Admissions is a cyclical job in the fall we are on the road meeting with prospective students at college fairs and high schools, in January, we start reading applications for next years incoming class, and over the summer, we get ready to do the whole thing again with a new class. Its a life of extremes just when I think I cant live out of a suitcase or eat at McDonalds any longer, its time to start reading applications. And just when I feel like I cant read another application, its time to start working with the next class. Reading season isnt the most glamorous time of year we read file after file on a computer screen until our eyes are bleary. Most of us look a little rough around the edges tired eyes from staying up reading applications and a cup of coffee never far away. If youve tried to contact our office in the past month youve probably noticed that we really arent available to speak to visitors like we generally are. The only way we can review applications, is to shut down to some extent and really focus on what students are sharing with us in their applications and selecting the students we will invite to be a part of our next incoming class out of an incredible pool of applicants. Since many of you have applied and are eagerly waiting to hear back from us, I thought we could share a little bit with you about what this time of year is like in our office. Dave has given you a great overview of what we are looking for when we read applications and I hope youve been able to review it, but this entry will outline a typical morning in the office during Reading Season in admissions. 8:00 a.m. Arrive at the office This is the first year we are reading applications on the computer. In the past, weve had paper applications, but this year, we read everything on a computer screen. We used to have applications stacked on our desks and floors of our offices; now we just have desktop computers. Our desks may look a lot cleaner, but were just as busy! 8:10 a.m. Coffee run Programs, information sessions, campus tours, emails to students and other things dont stop during file reading, so many of us read applications from home to try to keep up when other things take up our time in the office. This means a lot of late nights, so during this time of year, our office probably keeps the coffee shop across the street in business. 8:15 a.m. Back at our desks armed with caffeine and energy from the brisk walk outside, were ready to start reading applications. Right now, in order to finish reading applications to have decisions to you April 1, we are each reading 20 app lications a day. Given that our office responsibilities continue during reading season, we spend anywhere from 15-25 minutes reviewing each application and getting to know the student through their application. For many of us in admissions, file reading can be a tough time of year because of the long hours and amount of applications. But it is also one of the most rewarding parts of our job. Weve spent months helping students figure out where they want to apply, answering questions about UGA and about the application, and hearing about what they are interested in and what they are capable of in college. There is a tendency on the part of many to see rapid rates on population growth as giving rise to a barrier on a road to progress. This may threaten peace and stability in the world because the population growth may make it impossible to meet in a timely fashion, the reasonable aspirations of hundreds of millions of people in the underdeveloped countries. During the first three centuries of the modern era, from 1690 - 1990, the world population has multiplied five times, from 1 to more than 4.5 billion. Over this time span the population of Europe increased six times, and of Europe and European occupied areas in the Western Hemisphere and Oceania combined about eight times. The population of North America increased about 160 times and that of Latin America about fourteen times. During the same period, the population of Asia increased by less than 4 times (however, this contrasts with what must have been a much less rapid increase earlier. The absolute increase in Asia however was very large.) In Africa, the population merely doubled. It is clear that greatly accelerated growth occurred first among the nations that first experienced modernization - the combination of "revolutions," including the agricultural revolution, commercial revolution, science revolution, and the technological revolution. Explosive population growth, th! e "vital revolution" - a pace of growth without precedent in long settled areas - did not approach nations in Asia, Latin America, and Africa, until after Wold War I and especially after World War II. Rapid growth has been one of the three related population phenomena generating public concern. The two other are the increasing concentration of people on a relatively small portion of the Earth's surface - a phenomenon of better urbanization and mertopolitanization and growing diversity of the people who share the same geographical area and increasingly, the same economic, social, and political systems. World population growth is entirely the result of natural increase - the excess of births over deaths. If mortality declines rapidly and there is a high birth rate in any given country, there will become a heavy child burden that marks the beginning of overpopulation. The reasons for this remarkable change are not entirely clear. One cause was certainly the widespread control and virtual elimination of Malaria and other insect-carried disease. Other causes were widespread use of vaccines and modern drugs in less developed countries. There also has been speculation that human beings have developed more immunity to some microbial diseases that the virulence of some microorganisms has declined. The disadvantages of high birth rate are not generally admitted for two reasons. First there is and ideological prejudice against admitting that a high birth rate can in any way be harmful, and so anti nationalist policy does not generally appeal to politicians. Secondly, there is widespre! ad belief that an ever-greater pool of manpower is a military and economic asset to a nation. It therefore comes as a shock to many people to hear it maintained that one of the demographic factors weakening a nation's powers is a birth. Part of this may have to do with the fact that, in a very real sense, my grandfather embodied history to me. I have only just now come to that point in my life where time has loosed itself from its moorings, and memory has begun to develop an appreciable depth. But to me, my grandfather always seemed to have that depth. We can all remember asking our grandparents about their lives; it's fascinating to a young person, because here is someone talking about a time and a place that never existed or could exist for that young person. Here, before you, is someone who has traveled through time. And as you reconstruct the past with a grandparent, you also reconstruct the person. My grandfather had always been my grandfather: Older, balding, and grumpy. But he was also once a child, who didn't speak English until he was five years old. He was a teenager who used to play baseball. He was a young man who was dragged to a USO dance by a buddy, there to meet the woman he would marry. There's a richness of a life that can only be told though a recitation of its history. My grandfather came truly alive to me when I knew his life. A place and its history are meaningless unless there is a context in which to place it. The proper context for my father was within his family. If youve tried, and struggled, to learn English as a second language (ESL) the usual ways, its time to try it Dr. James Ashers way—through movement. With a student seated on each side of him, Asher demonstrates his technique by asking them to do what he does. Thats all. They dont repeat what he says, they just do what he does.
